Five Below continued to report double-digit sales growth for the third quarter, as the chain’s focus on value met customers’ growing demand.
The company’s net sales soared 23.1 per cent year-on-year to $1.038 billion for the quarter ended November 1, supported by 49 net new stores.
Comparable sales jumped 14.3 per cent, accelerating from the 12.4 per cent increase in the second quarter.
The retailer swung to an operating income of $43.3 million from a loss of $0.6 million a year earlier. Net income surged from $1.7 million to $36.5 million.
According to GlobalData MD Neil Saunders, the Five Below’s price-focused offer currently resonates with those looking for good value for money, a trend seen across a lot of dollar and discount stores.
“However, the real trick is to combine value with a fun shopping experience,” he said. “This means that consumers have an affinity for Five Below and enjoy visiting – something that is especially true among kids whose pester power helps to drive the family demographic through the door.”
Aside from strong foot traffic, the chain has very good conversion rates, Saunders said, attributing this to a balanced assortment that spans both discretionary and essential categories, accessible price points, and strengthened range.
The fact that Five Below leans heavily into seasonal occasions is also an important driver of business, he continued, adding that the chain increased its share of back to school significantly during the quarter.
For the full year, the company expects net sales to be in the range of $4.62 billion to $4.65 billion and comparable sales to grow 9.4-10.1 per cent.
“Although the current economic environment is conducive to boosting customer numbers, Five Below has not been a passive bystander,” said Saunders.
“Within these numbers, there is probably also a bit of a Temu dividend as the online giant is now playing a less significant role among consumers. But even without this, Five Below’s own actions are sufficient to propel results and to continue delivering across the golden quarter,” he added.
