Kmart will close its last full-size location in the US next month, reducing its store network to only one.
The store, located in Bridgehampton, New York, is set to shut down on October 20, CNN reported, citing an employee at the venue.
Following the closure, Kmart will retain only one store in Miami, which is in a smaller format and offers a limited range of products. Outside the mainland US, the retailer still has several stores in Guam and the US Virgin Islands.
Founded in 1899, Kmart used to peak at 2000 stores and was among the country’s retail giants.
The chain merged with Sears in 2005, and the combined company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2018 as it lost market share to other competitors as well as e-commerce players.
The company emerged from bankruptcy after being bought by Transformco and was able to keep approximately 190 Kmart stores and 230 Sears locations.
