Walmart plans to open its first branded stores in South Africa later this year, offering a wide range of products, from groceries to technology, at affordable prices.

The store openings will expand Walmart’s presence in South Africa and mark its first namesake locations. The company has already operated in the market for years through its fully owned subsidiary Massmart, which owns chains like Makro, Game, and Builders Warehouse.

Sites for the new stores are already in development, and the opening dates will be announced next month. The company will also provide further details about locations, hiring, and community initiatives in the coming months.

According to Walmart international president and CEO Kath McLay, the South African stores will offer merchandise including fresh groceries, household essentials, apparel and technology, as well as locally sourced products.

The stores will also offer the chain’s signature ‘Every Day Low Prices’ and global standards. Enhanced digital capabilities will also be introduced to improve the customer experience.

Globally, Walmart operates more than 10,750 stores and numerous e-commerce sites in 19 countries. The company reported revenue of $681 billion in the last fiscal year.
