After first joining the company in 2019 as its chief marketing officer, Kelly Cook will be stepping into the role of chief executive officer of David’s Bridal in April. Inside Retail connected with the newly promoted executive to learn more about her passion for the bridal retail industry and her advice for aspiring entrepreneurs. Inside Retail: What does a ‘day in the life’ look like for you? Kelly Cook: Every morning, without fail, I start with a heart of gratitude to be in an in

Next, I read every single customer review.
We [at David’s Bridal] call it “living in the ones,” meaning it’s encouraging and exciting to see the 5-star reviews, for which I’m grateful we delivered magical moments. We also read the 1-star reviews, albeit they’re rare. It’s important to focus on continually delivering excellence across all aspects of our brand and her journey.
Throughout the day, I’m filled with brainstorming new innovations, deep-diving into data and ensuring we execute our long-term vision. Of course, in between, I also make time for my family and my two basset hounds, Jasper and Rufus!
Finally, I send a $2 bill and a thank-you note to at least three team members every day. This ensures I stay focused on recognizing others and showing gratitude for their passions and enthusiasm in serving our team.
IR: What tools or tricks do you use to maintain a good work-life balance?
KC: I’m like every other woman out there. Sometimes, I feel great! Sometimes, I feel like a busted can of biscuits!
My priorities keep me grounded. They are faith, family and work.
I’ve been a wife to my Scooby Snack of a husband for 31 years. I’m a mother to five extraordinary children and three “children-in-law.” Now, I’m a Glamma to the most yummy grandson and after all of that, I get to come to work in an industry with passionate people who love to serve. It’s a dream!
IR: What are the most important items in your business toolbox?
KC: AI, data analytics, insights and the voice of the customer. These are the biggest items in my toolbox.
IR: You have quite an extensive retail career, having worked with companies such as Kmart, Designer Shoe Warehouse and, of course, David’s Bridal, over the past 15 years. What is it about the retail industry that keeps you so passionate?
KC: My number one strength in all strength finders is to “learn”. That’s what fuels me.
Retail is constantly evolving. The ability to learn and shape how people interact and experience brands excites and inspires me daily. It’s never the same. I love working with people like that. They say if people in your circle don’t inspire you, then you don’t have a circle, you have a cage. #STAYINSPIRED
IR: What is it specifically about the bridal industry that caught and held your attention over the past few years?
KC: Love. Simply love.
Being an industry and business that is based on the primary reason we’re put on this earth, to love others. Does it get any better than that?!
IR: What piece of advice would you give to people just starting out on day one of their retail journeys?
KC: Surround yourself with people who make you better and have fun!
IR: What is one unique lesson you’ve learned from your time working within the retail industry?
KC: The fact that there’s a stairway to heaven and a highway to hell tells you a lot about expected traffic numbers.
Meaning, you should always do the right thing.
IR: What would you tell aspiring entrepreneurs hoping to reach your level one day?
KC: Be brave enough to suck at something new.
