Canadian vegan fast-food restaurant chain Odd Burger has halted its US expansion plans, citing escalating political tensions between the two countries.

The company said its strategy to deal with tariffs, which was announced earlier this month, is not moving forward at this time. Instead, its plans on using the capital to invest in its Canadian manufacturing and franchise operations.

“Given the global tariff uncertainty, we are putting the brakes on our US expansion until pricing metrics can be formulated with certainty,” said  CEO and co-founder James McInnes.

“We are also seeing increased demand for our products in Canada, and as a Canadian company, we want to make sure that we focus on our core market at this time.”

McInnes founded Odd Burger in 2014 and opened its first restaurant in 2017. The chain currently has 22 locations across four provinces in Canada.

The company also produces over 20 plant-based proteins and dairy-free sauces under the brand Preposterous Foods at its manufacturing facility in London, Ontario. Its food service product line is available for purchase at Sysco distribution centers.
