Target has pulled a Halloween costume from sale and apologized after its design drew criticism on social media for resembling racist ‘blackface’ and minstrel show imagery.

The company said the Kids’ Glows Under Blacklight Circus Clown Halloween Costume should not have been included in its seasonal selection.

“As a company, we know we got this wrong, and we are deeply sorry,” Target said. “The costume is offensive and should never have been part of our assortment. It is no longer available for sale.”

The costume featured a child wearing a bright orange and black outfit, black gloves, and a mask with a wide, toothy smile. Critics said the styling and pose resembled racist caricatures of people used in minstrel shows.

Target said it is reviewing how the product was approved and what changes are needed to prevent a similar issue from happening again.

“We know this is especially hurtful for our customers, team members, and partners,” the company added.

“Removing the costume is an important first step, and the company is looking closely at how this happened and what needs to change to ensure this won’t happen again.”

The costume was sold under Target’s seasonal Hyde and Eek Boutique brand. Target has yet to comment on who designed the product or how it was approved for sale.
