Target shuts nine stores rendered unsustainable by organised crime

Discount department store chain Target will close nine stores across four states, effective October 21, citing theft and organised retail crime.

The company said high levels of violations have been threatening the safety of staff and customers, as well as contributing to unsustainable business performance.

“Before making this decision, we invested heavily in strategies to prevent and stop theft and organised retail crime in our stores, such as adding more security team members, using third-party guard services, and implementing theft-deterrent tools across our business.”

However, the company still faces challenges to operate safely and efficiently.

The closure will affect one store in New York, two in Seattle, three in San Francisco/Oakland, and three in Portland.

All eligible team members will be offered the opportunity to transfer to other Target locations.

The company added it remains committed to serving guests with more than 150 locations open in markets where the closures are taking place.
