Kroger has appointed Mark Ibbotson as the company’s new EVP and chief store operations officer, effective September 14.

In his new post, Ibbotson will oversee store operations across Kroger’s retail network. His main responsibilities will include simplifying store processes, supporting frontline teams, and coordinating physical and digital operations to enhance the company’s retail strategy.

Bringing an extensive background in international and US retail operations to the executive team, Ibbotson began his career in the UK at Sainsbury’s before moving to Asda in 2004. 

At Asda, he progressed to several leadership roles, including retail director and COO, where he managed store performance and expanded pickup and drive-through options.

In 2015, Ibbotson transitioned to Walmart US as SVP of innovation and was later named EVP of central operations and realty. 

At Walmart, he oversaw store operations, real estate, asset protection, and early digital transformation initiatives, such as developing grocery e-commerce options, pickup, and delivery services.

Since leaving Walmart in 2020, Ibbotson has advised retail and technology companies, including a four-year tenure as a senior advisor for McKinsey & Company.

Kroger CEO Greg Foran said Ibbotson has managed retail operations at scale and possesses practical experience in streamlining systems and supporting store personnel.

“He knows what it takes to simplify complex operations, bring out the best in frontline teams, and build the digital and physical capabilities that win with customers,” said Foran.
