Outdoor specialty retailer LL Bean is set to reopen its renovated flagship store in Freeport, Maine, in September following a $50 million refurbishment that began two years ago.
During the project, much of the retailer’s merchandise was relocated to Camp LL Bean, a 28,000sqft temporary structure built in a nearby parking lot.
The renovated store features a new main entrance on the first floor, anchored by a grand staircase and a redesigned facade facing Main Street.
Other additions include expanded aquatic exhibits, such as a two-tier trout pond twice the size of its predecessor and a larger stream tank designed to house more fish.
The flagship will also feature a Custom Shop offering monogramming, engraving, and embossing services, while the retailer’s 1912 Cafe has expanded to 3000sqft and will offer a broader menu.
Elsewhere on campus, LL Bean has expanded Discovery Park to create additional green space and accommodate more outdoor programming. The retailer has also redesigned its children’s department based on feedback from a focus group.
Shawn Gorman, board chairman, recalled that his great-grandfather opened LL’s first store in 1971 and never imagined it would become what it is today.
“This is as much a celebration of his legacy and for Freeport as it is for LL Bean,” he added.
“We can’t wait to unveil to our customers and our community a flagship for the next century.”
