JCPenney is inviting shoppers to return purchases they regret buying, in a bid to encourage repeat spending while supporting charitable donations.

From August 28 to 30, customers can return eligible items with tags attached, for any reason, and receive a $15 coupon toward a $50 purchase.

The initiative marks a departure from the retailer’s standard returns policy, which is typically limited to issues such as damaged merchandise or incorrect sizing.

Returned items will be donated through nonprofit Good360, which distributes excess goods to communities in need.

Regular returns require items to be in original condition within 60 days.

“Here’s what we know about you,” said Marisa Thalberg, EVP and chief customer and marketing officer at Catalyst Brands. “You don’t want less. You want better for less. Better quality. Better brands. Better experience. Better value.”

Promoting the campaign, JCPenney said many shoppers leave stores disappointed after being unable to find the right size or settling for an item that doesn’t quite fit.

“Doesn’t it feel better to release it, knowing it will go to someone who actually needs it? Now that’s healing,” the retailer added.

While the option to return unwanted purchases sounds appealing, customers may not see it as worthwhile for items valued at more than $15. In those cases, donating the items or reselling them through online marketplaces could be a more practical option.
