Discount store chain Bargain Hunt is closing all of its stores after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this week.

The company is set to shut down 92 locations by the end of this month, with going-out-of-business sales managed by Hilco Consumer – Retail in a joint venture with Gordon Brothers.

The chain will initially discount apparel and shoes, toys, lawn and garden supplies, pet products, home decor and other goods by 40 per cent. 

The closure comes after Essex Technology Group, which operates as Bargain Hunt, filed for Chapter 11 on Monday. The company listed assets of $10 million to $50 million and liabilities of between $50 million and $100 million.

According to Home Textiles Today, Amazon is the chain’s biggest creditor, with unsecured claims exceeding $29 million. Target and freight company Averitt are also among the creditors.

Founded in 2004, The extreme-value closeout retailer has stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Last month, Books Inc, the oldest bookstore in the Bay Area, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy amid persisting financial difficulties.
