Whataburger has appointed Debbie Stroud as CEO, effective January 1 next year, succeeding Ed Nelson who will retire at the end of this year.

Stroud, currently EVP and COO, will also take on the president role beginning on January 1.

Prior to joining Whataburger, Stroud served as SVP of US retail operations at Starbucks and as VP and GM at McDonald’s.

“Debbie has brought a wealth of knowledge and a strong vision for operational excellence and high-quality made-to-order food to Whataburger,” said Matthew Rose, Whataburger chairman.

“We are excited for her to extend her energy and passion for building great teams and delivering extraordinary hospitality to customers across our expanding operations.”

Meanwhile, Whataburger expressed its appreciation for Nelson, who has been in the company since 2004.

Under Nelson’s leadership over the past five years, Whataburger opened more than 250 stores, expanding into 16 new states.

“Ed’s passion for the Whataburger brand has been unparalleled, and he has expertly guided the company to new heights, embodying the drive and resilience Texans are known for,” said Rose.
