Candler Hospital has become the first of its kind in the US to have an Amazon’s Just Walk Out-enabled store, offering high tech solutions to patients, visitors and staff members.

With the Just Walk Out technology, employees and hospital visitors can access SmartBytes – the hospital’s retail market anytime for a frictionless and cashless shopping experience.

“Candler Hospital co-workers needing a quick snack or a meal during the third shift, as well as visitors taking care of friends or family members, have a convenient way to purchase the meals, snacks, and drinks they need so they can quickly get back to their loved ones,” said Paul P Hinchey, president and CEO of St Joseph’s/Candler.

“Once we evaluate its impact post launch, we will determine how this technology might be utilized on our other campuses.”

To make purchases, employees and visitors can swipe their credit card or employee badge to enter the retail store and select from a wide range of food offerings. The technology detects which items are taken from or returned to shelves.

As they exit the store, customers can leave without waiting in line, and their preferred payment is charged for the items taken.

Just Walk Out technology is designed to simplify the shopping experience by eliminating checkout lines and helping consumers get in and out quickly and seamlessly. It is made possible by artificial intelligence like computer vision and deep learning techniques to accurately determine who took what.

Just Walk Out technology-enabled stores can be found at more than 120 third-party locations including airports, stadiums, university campuses, grocery and convenience stores, theme parks, and cafes in the US, the UK, Canada, and Australia.
