Rubio’s Coastal Grill has shut down 48 underperforming stores in California, with 13 of them located in San Diego.

Currently, Rubio’s Coastal Grill has 86 stores across California, Arizona, and Nevada that remain open, CBS8 reported.

“The closings were brought about by the rising cost of doing business in California,” said a Rubio’s spokesperson.

“While painful, the store closures are a necessary step in our strategic long-term plan to position Rubio’s for success for years to come.”

In 2020, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, citing the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the business.

The spokesperson said that Rubio conducted a thorough review of the operations and the business climate before deciding to close the stores.
