Papa John’s reported lower second-quarter sales as weaker domestic demand continued to weigh on performance.
Global system-wide restaurant sales declined 4.8 per cent year on year to $1.2 billion in the quarter ended June 28.
Meanwhile, North America comparable sales fell 8.3 per cent, with company-owned restaurants down 8.9 per cent and franchised locations down 8.2 per cent
Net income slipped to $9 million from $10 million a year earlier.
The company opened 50 restaurants during the quarter, including nine in North America and 41 globally.
“While our transformation is taking longer than anticipated, we continue to execute our strategy with discipline and focus,” said Papa John’s CEO Todd Penegor.
He added that the company remains confident in its operating and capital allocation strategy to improve performance and create long-term value for shareholders, customers and franchisees.
