Turkish grocery delivery service Getir has acquired online grocery company FreshDirect from Ahold Delhaize as part of its growth strategy in the US.

The acquisition, the financial details of which were not disclosed, will leverage Getir’s technology and operational footprint, allowing it to offer faster services, the company said.

FreshDirect is expected to help Getir further increase the quality and breadth of its product range, especially fresh products, making it more attractive to its customers in New York.

FreshDirect will retain its brand name and continue to operate out of its facility in the Bronx. Customers of the two companies will continue to receive the same service as before.

Founded in 2015 as a startup company, Getir currently operates in Turkey, the UK, Germany, the Netherlands and the US. The company announced earlier this year it had exited Italy, Spain, and Portugal.
