Gap has named Donald Kohler global brand president and CEO of Banana Republic, bringing the retail veteran back to the company where he began his leadership career.

Kohler will assume the role in July and will be based in San Francisco.

He will oversee efforts to strengthen Banana Republic’s product architecture, deepen brand storytelling, enhance store and digital experiences, and improve execution across global channels.

He joins from PVH Americas, where he served as CEO, overseeing brands including Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger. Kohler has also held senior leadership roles at Burberry, Ferragamo, and Diesel.

Earlier in his career, Kohler spent more than 10 years at Gap in merchandising leadership roles across Gap, GapKids, and BabyGap.

“Returning to Gap is deeply meaningful for me,” he said.

“I believe great brands are built by great teams, and I look forward to getting to know the Banana Republic team and building what’s next together.”

Gap president and CEO Richard Dickson described Kohler as a product-focused leader with a strong track record in revitilizing brands.

“He is deeply respected as a people leader who builds trust and develops high-performing teams,” Dickson said.

“That rare combination of operational excellence and brand building positions him well to lead Banana Republic’s next chapter, building on the brand’s momentum and reinvigoration as a modern explorer brand.”
