Target Corporation has appointed Joe DePinto, former president and CEO of 7-Eleven, to its board, effective August 1.

Following his appointment, DePinto will join the Target board’s infrastructure and finance, and audit and risk committees.

DePinto was appointed president and CEO of 7-Eleven in 2005 and remained in that role until December last year.

Before leading the convenience operator, he was president at GameStop Corporation and held executive roles at PepsiCo.

Over the course of his career in retail and consumer products, DePinto has also held board seats at several public corporations, including restaurant operator Brinker International, Jo-Ann Stores, and OfficeMax.

The appointment comes as Target operates under CEO Michael Fiddelke, who assumed the position as the company evaluates its store network, supply chain infrastructure, loyalty programs, and fresh food category expansion.

Christine Leahy, Target’s lead independent director, said DePinto’s background in retail operations, digital sales channels, and consumer goods will support the board’s oversight duties.

Target currently operates more than 2000 retail locations across the US and employs over 400,000 people.

In May, Target ended its streak of sales declines with positive first-quarter results, marking an “early win” for the new CEO and his team, according to an analyst.
