Denny’s – known for its slogan “America’s diner is always open” – is closing down 150 restaurants by next year.
The company said it will close locations that are either too old, need remodeling, or have become unprofitable.
“Some of these restaurants can be very old. So when you think of a 70-year-plus brand, you have a lot of restaurants that have been out there for a very long time,” said Stephen Dunn, EVP and chief global development officer of Denny’s.
Other cost-cutting measures that the chain has implemented include culling its 24/7 operations and downsizing its menu from 97 items to 46.
Dunn added that 24/7 operating hours are a “contraction that happened for everyone” and that less foot traffic during those off hours means it “didn’t make sense” for a restaurant to remain open.
Fifty locations are set to close by the end of this year, while the remaining 100 will shut down next year.
