Costco ends year strong as domestic business powers fourth quarter

Costco has ended the fiscal year on a strong note after recording another quarter of double-digit sales growth.

The company’s net sales jumped 11.2 per cent to $93.9 billion in the fourth quarter ended August 30, extending the 11.6 per cent uplift in the third quarter.

On a comparable basis, sales rose 9.4 per cent, led by a 10.7 per cent increase in the US. Canada posted a 5 per cent uplift, while other international markets logged a 7 per cent improvement.

Adjusted comparable sales, which exclude the impact of changes in gasoline prices and foreign exchange, rose 6.7 per cent, including a 7.2 per cent growth in the US. 

Net income for the fourth quarter was $2.998 billion, up from $2.610 billion a year earlier, thanks to tariff refunds.

For the full year, net sales soared 10.1 per cent to $297.2 billion. Comparable sales rose 8.4 per cent, with the US up 8.2 per cent, Canada up 7.2 per cent and other international markets up 9.8 per cent.

Net income for the year rose from $8.099 billion to $9.226 billion.

As of August 30, Costco operated 939 warehouses, including 647 in the US. The company also operates stores and e-commerce sites in the US, Canada, the UK, Mexico, Korea, Taiwan, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and China.
