Lego has launched Lego Smart Play, a new platform that integrates physical bricks with responsive technology.
Unveiled at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, the interactive block system is designed to extend traditional world-building without the use of screens.
Lego Smart Play comprises three components: The Lego Smart Brick, Lego Smart Tags, and Lego Smart Minifigures. These elements respond to physical interactions, allowing builds to trigger sounds and programmed behaviours during play.
At the centre of the system is the Lego Smart Brick, which contains a custom-designed chip smaller than a standard Lego stud. The brick also includes sensors, accelerometers, light and sound detection, a miniature speaker with an onboard synthesiser and wireless charging.
Lego said the technology is designed to function within standard Lego builds and remain compatible with existing bricks.
Tom Donaldson, SVP and head of creative play lab at the Lego Group, said the goal of the innovation is to extend physical building with digital capabilities while keeping play screen-free.
“We truly believe we are setting a new standard for interactive, imaginative experiences and can’t wait to see this innovation in the hands of kids when we launch this year,” he added.
The toy maker confirmed that the first Smart Play sets will feature Star Wars, which were presented during the CES event alongside executives from The Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilm.
