Kate Spade New York, a subsidiary brand of Tapestry, has named designer Jonathan Saunders as its executive creative director, effective August 26.
With more than two decades of design experience, Saunders will direct product design and visual identity across the brand’s commercial portfolio in his new role.
He will report directly to Kate Spade New York brand president and CEO Eva Erdmann and will relocate to the company’s headquarters located in Hudson Yards, New York.
Throughout his career in the apparel and accessories sectors, Saunders has held creative roles and consulted for multiple international brands, including Alexander McQueen, Diane von Furstenberg, Calvin Klein, Tiffany & Co, and Pucci.
Before his current appointment, he held the position of chief creative officer at the retail clothing brand & Other Stories.
The creative leadership transition positions Saunders to guide product design for the fashion label, which was established in 1993.
Saunders will oversee the brand’s upcoming merchandise lines, visual identity, and design direction starting in late August.
“Kate Spade has always stood for positivity, femininity and a touch of wit,” said Erdmann. “Jonathan shares our consumer obsession, and he understands the heart of our brand. He’s also a collaborative leader, and I’m excited to work together to introduce an uplifting vision of luxury to a new generation of consumers.”
Tapestry, which also owns Coach, manages Kate Spade’s international distribution across e-commerce channels, department stores, and standalone retail storefronts.
Last year, Tapestry reported a double-digit sales growth in the first quarter, as Coach continued to power the gains while Kate Spade underperformed.
