JD Sports Fashion has made two US leadership changes, naming John Mersho as president and CEO of JD North America and Mike Grimes as group CMO, effective immediately.
Mersho moves into the North America CEO role after serving as chief commercial officer since last year. He succeeds John Hall, who is retiring after a 40-year career in retail, including three years as JD North America CEO.
Régis Schultz, group CEO of JD Sports Fashion, said the appointments would support the next phase of their growth.
“John and Mike are outstanding leaders – both well-tenured within our business, bringing extensive experience and deep knowledge of the markets we operate in,” Schultz said.
“Together, they will play a critical role in delivering against our strategy, enhancing the experience of our customers, and driving sustainable growth across JD.”
Mersho is a member of the family that founded Shoe Palace in 1993 and has built relationships across the sportswear industry. In his new role, he will focus on product development, omnichannel customer experience, brand awareness, and expansion.
“The opportunity to lead the North American arm of one of the most dynamic retailers in the world is rare, and I’m honoured to take on the position,” Mersho said.
“Our teams have worked hard to build strong foundations for growth across the region, and I’m looking forward to capitalising on the opportunities that lie ahead.”
Grimes, meanwhile, takes on the newly expanded role of group CMO after nearly 20 years with JD and its North American business, including a stint as CMO of JD North America.
As group CMO, Grimes will oversee the long-term direction of the brand globally, working with local teams to focus on customer relationships, brand partnerships, and the retailer’s own-brand portfolio.
“JD has built a powerful brand with a clear point of differentiation and strong momentum across several international markets,” Grimes said. “I’m excited to lead the next phase of its brand and marketing evolution.”
