Dollar General marks 20,000-store milestone

Dollar General has launched a new store at Market in Alice, Texas, marking the brand’s 20,000th location US-wide. 

The retailer says the launch strengthens its commitment to providing communities with quick and inexpensive access to home necessities and healthy foods.

“Today marks an incredible milestone in Dollar General’s history,” said Steve Deckard, Dollar General’s executive VP of store operations and development. 

“From our first general store to today’s 20,000th store opening, our mission to serve others and help customers stretch their budget remains strong. We believe each store provides a positive impact in our hometowns through convenient access to affordable essentials, career growth opportunities for employees, and the ability for local nonprofits, schools and libraries to advance through Dollar General Literacy Foundation grants.” 

Dollar General contributed $20,000 to educational and tutoring programmes, with $10,000 each going to the Alicia Salinas Public Library and the Boys & Girls Club of Alice. It also donated new books to Saenz Elementary School in Alice to assist pupils develop a love of reading.

Dollar General was founded as a wholesale business by JL Turner and his son, Cal Turner, Sr. The father-and-son duo opened the first Dollar General store in 1955 in Kentucky’s Springfield.
