Beyond Inc – the parent company of Bed Bath & Beyond and Overstock – reported double-digit declines in both full-year and fourth-quarter revenue, reflecting ongoing challenges as the company works to reset its business.

Despite the drop, executive chairman Marcus Lemonis said the company is focused on building a profitable foundation through strategic cost reductions, improved site experience, and removing underperforming SKUs and vendors.

“We will continue to make calibrated decisions to reset the company’s base and build a profitable foundation,” he said.

Beyond’s total net revenue for the fourth quarter was $303 million, a decrease of 21.1 per cent year-over-year. Gross profit was $70 million, or 23 per cent of net revenue, while the net loss stood at $81 million. Adjusted EBITDA was negative $28 million, representing a negative 9.2 per cent of net revenue.

For the full year, total net revenue was $1.4 billion, down 10.6 per cent year-over-year. Gross profit was $290 million, or 20.8 per cent of total net revenue, with a net loss of $259 million. Adjusted EBITDA for the year was negative $144 million, or negative 10.3 per cent of net revenue.

Neil Saunders, MD of GlobalData, shared how Beyond has been “snapping up brands” since 2021 and that the results of the buying spree have been unimpressive.

“Compared to the full fiscal of 2021, sales in the latest year have declined by 49.4 per cent or $1.4 billion in cash terms,” he explained.

“Admittedly, the home furnishings market was on a high in 2021, but the decline from that peak has been nowhere near as bad as Beyond’s numbers.”

Saunders said, however, that Beyond has shown attempts to work through these issues but not enough to move the needle over the year ahead.

“There needs to be a much more cohesive strategy and much more focus on building up the brands to engineer success,” he concluded.”
