Department store chain Macy’s has secured a deal to be exclusively developed into a fictionalized television series based on the best-selling novel When Women Ran Fifth Avenue.

The company is in the process of securing a showrunner and attaching talent for the lead roles. Chief marketing officer Sharon Otterman will lead the project.

In the book, author Julie Satow uncovers the untold stories of the women who built and shaped some of the most iconic department stores in America. Their innovations laid the foundation for modern shopping culture and challenged the limits of what women could achieve in business.

Margaret Getchell, the executive who transformed Macy’s in the 19th century, will be added to the adapted story.

“These are stories of resilience, ambition and creativity – women who understood the power of storytelling and branding long before it was a business strategy,” said Otterman.

Macy’s recently signed a new 10-year rights deal with NBCUniversal for its Thanksgiving Day Parade and 4th of July Fireworks on NBC, Peacock and Telemundo.

The company said these newly secured rights will help propel its entertainment offer.

The department store chain reported a 4.2 per cent decline in net sales for the year ended February 1. However, its net loss in the prior year was replaced by a profit of $342 million.
