Kohl’s will shut down 27 underperforming stores by April and its San Bernardino e-commerce fulfillment centre upon the expiration of its lease in May.

The underperforming stores consist of one store in Alabama, one in Arkansas, 10 in California, one in Colorado, one in Georgia, one in Idaho, two in Illinois, one in Massachusetts, one in New Jersey, one in Ohio, one in Oregon, one in Pennsylvania, one in Texas, one in Utah, and two in Virginia.

“As we continue to build on our long-term growth strategy, it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams,” said Tom Kingsbury, CEO at Kohl’s.

The company said it has informed all associates about the closure and has offered each a severance package or the opportunity to apply to other available positions in the company.

Last November, the company reported its third-quarter net sales fell 8.8 per cent to $3.5 billion.
