Under Armour and NBA star Stephen Curry have agreed to end their partnership after more than a decade.
As part of the separation, Curry Brand will become independent of Under Armour, with Curry maintaining sole ownership of the brand and Under Armour will develop new basketball products under its namesake brand.
The Curry 13 – the final Curry Brand x Under Armour shoe – will still be released in February as planned, with additional colorways and apparel collections available through October.
Curry signed with Under Armour in 2013 after his Nike contract expired. The brand was launched in 2020 as an extension of the partnership. The brand focuses on performance footwear, apparel, and accessories and was positioned as a competitor to Nike’s Jordan Brand.
“Under Armour believed in me early in my career and gave me the space to build something much bigger and more impactful than a shoe,” said Curry. “Curry Brand was created to change the game for good and over the past five years, we successfully changed the game for kids, for communities, and for basketball.”
According to Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank, the split comes as Under Armour focuses on its core brand during a critical stage of our turnaround.
“This move lets two strong teams do what they do best,” Plank said. “Under Armour is focused on product innovation and performance for athletes at every level. Curry Brand gets the independence to determine its own future.”
Under Armour does not expect the desperation to have a significant impact on its financial results.
The company recently reported a 5 per cent revenue decline and a net loss of $19 million for the quarter ended September 30.
