Metro Mattress has filed for Chapter 11 protection at the US Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of New York and expressed its intent to exit other markets as part of the restructuring.

The bedding specialty retailer operates 69 stores in five states and said that it will now focus on bolstering its New York stores, Furniture Today reported.

The company cited expansion into new markets and recent economic downturns as reasons for the filing.

“We have made the tough decision to exit the New England market,” said Dino Cifelli, Metro Mattress CEO.

“This strategic step allows us, with the support of our vendors and loyal customer base, to pave the way to a robust future.”

Metro Mattress noted that there would be no disruptions to its operations and that the company will continue to honor its existing warranties and commitments.

Metro Mattress estimated its assets at $1 million to $10 million and liabilities at $10 million to $50 million, with creditors ranging from 100 to 199.
